Understanding the Costs of Varicose Vein Treatment

by | Sep 27, 2023

Are you considering treatment for varicose veins but find yourself curious about the associated costs? We understand that cost is an important factor in making healthcare decisions, and we’re pleased to share some thoughts on this.

Venous Disease can be a complex and often challenging condition, impacting one or both legs. The journey towards healthier veins typically begins with a simple phone call to our practice, where you’ll be greeted by our knowledgeable Patient Liaison Officer.

The Initial Conversation

During this initial conversation, we will engage in a broad discussion about the type of veins and symptoms you’ve been experiencing. We’re here to offer guidance and provide you with some general insights regarding what to expect in terms of the initial consultation, the treatment options available, and even estimates of potential costs. It’s a warm and informative conversation aimed at setting you on the right path.

Why Can’t We Quote Exact Costs Over the Phone?

You might wonder why we can’t provide you with an exact cost for your treatment during that first call. The answer is that venous disease varies widely among individuals. The nature and extent of treatment required can differ significantly. That’s why it’s crucial for us to perform an initial assessment before providing you with a precise quote.

Your Initial Assessment

It’s important to mention that the fee for the initial consultation, which includes a comprehensive examination and ultrasound assessment, is $300 (Medicare reimburses $73). This is a crucial first step in understanding your unique vein health needs. This thorough consultation, lasting up to 90 minutes, includes a comprehensive clinical examination, a Duplex Ultrasound scan, and the development of a personalised treatment plan. It’s during this examination that we can precisely determine the nature and extent of your treatment requirements.

Getting it in Writing – Your Vein Health Blueprint

At the conclusion of your initial consultation, we will give you an itemised cost estimate for your proposed treatment in writing. This detailed document will break down the expenses associated with your treatment plan and the Medicare rebates that will apply. It will also encompass any follow-up ultrasound examinations and review visits that may be necessary for your ongoing care. You’ll know exactly where you stand.

Medicare Rebates

It’s important to note that Medicare rebates apply to patients who present with significant symptoms and/or clear signs of venous disease, confirmed by a formal Duplex Ultrasound. This means that if your condition is impacting your quality of life, Medicare support should be available to you.

However surface veins without any associated symptoms or signs of venous disease generally do not qualify for Medicare rebates.
